The Senior Executive Service became effective on July 13, 1979.

Its stated purpose is to "Ensure that the Executive Management of the Government of the United States is responsive to the needs, policies, and goals of the nation and otherwise is of the highest quality."

To apply for an SES (Senior Executive Service) position, you need a Federal SES Resume.

The SES resume is significantly different from the federal resumix and the typical Government resumes written for most GS positions.

SES Resume writing must be undertaken in a much more professional and exacting manner. There is no room for error in this document.

To give you an idea of the thoroughness required the SES resume writer must include:

Announcement number, title and grade, Personal Information including: full name, mailing address, home phone, cell phone and work phone numbers, e-mail address, Social Security number, country of citizenship (most federal jobs require US citizenship), veterans preference if any, your highest federal civilian grade held and a professional summary.

Work Experience, including job titles (with series & grade if federal jobs, or level in military if a veteran).Include employer's name and address, supervisor's name and phone number, Beginning and ending dates (month and year) hours per week, salary amount as well as your duties and accomplishments.

SES resumes must also include: Education, including the names and addresses of the colleges and/or universities, your major area of study, plus the type and year of any degrees you received, your GPA, the number of total credits and the kinds of credits earned, the course list, the high school name and address, along with the date of the diploma or GED.

Other Qualifications include: job-related training courses and licenses (Secret or Top Secret clearances),job-related skills (language skills, computer expertise, tools, machinery ), job-related honors, awards, and accomplishments as well as any society memberships--professional or honor. Also include all leadership activities and public speaking.

And your SES resume must also be written so that your value as an executive is conveyed in an interesting manner.

The law requires that the executive qualifications of each new appointee to the Senior Executive Service (SES) be certified by an independent Qualifications Review Board based on criteria established by the Office of Personnel Management.

At the core of the SES resume, the evaluation and the final determinations are the ECQ's (The Executive Core Qualifications). These describe the leadership skills needed to succeed in the SES. There are five fundamental (ECQ's) Executive Core Qualifications. The ECQs were designed to assess executive experience and potential not technical expertise. They measure whether an individual has the broad executive skills needed to succeed in a variety of SES positions.

The five fundamental ECQ's are:

  • ECQ 1 Leading Change
  • ECQ 2 Leading People
  • ECQ 3 Results Driven
  • ECQ 4 Business Acumen
  • ECQ 5 Building coalitions

Successful performance in the SES requires competence in each ECQ. When writing your SES resume you must show that the ECQs are interdependent; successful executives bring all five to bear when providing service to the Nation.

Along with the Federal SES Resume the ECQ questions must be written in such a way that your competance in each area and your ability to use these skills interdependantly is shown clearly and succinctly You must not falter here or be weak. They must communicate strongly and effectively how and why you are qualified to be fill a leadership role in the Federal Government.
